Two PhD scholarships on NATO
Two PhD scholarships on NATO to be placed jointly at University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS)
Two PhD scholarships are available to be placed jointly at the Department of Political Science and Public Management at the University of Southern Denmark and at DIIS in the research unit on Defence and Security. Both scholarships will focus on NATO’s ability to adapt to the strategic environment of the 21st century.
The scholarships are available for appointment for a period of three years as of 1 September 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter. The PhD scholarships must be completed over a three-year period and the workplace will be divided between Odense (SDU) and Copenhagen (DIIS). The allocation of a PhD scholarship presupposes enrolment in the PhD programme in Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark.
The two projects will focus on NATO’s ability to adapt internally and externally to the new strategic environment. The point of departure for both PhD scholarships are the NATO summits in Bucharest and Strasbourg/Kehl, which laid the foundations for defining NATO’s role and relationships in the 21st century.
Project 1: The Practice of Institutional Cooperation between NATO and the EU in Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan.
Project 1 focuses on NATO’s ability to adapt externally, especially on its ability to cooperate with the EU. The ambition from the Bucharest summit was increased cooperation with the EU and a comprehensive approach in operations. The project will focus on practical cooperation and institutional arrangements between NATO and the EU in the operations in Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan.
Project 2: NATO’s Strategic Concept and the Rationale of the Atlantic Alliance
Project 2 focuses on NATO’s internal efforts to define its strategic rationale, which in the post-Cold War era has happened with the Strategic Concept of 1991, the 1999 revised version hereof, and the Strategic Concept that was initiated in Strasbourg/Kehl and which will be finalized in 2010. The project must investigate the making and nature of the 2010 Strategic Concept and draw on past historical experience in its analysis and assessment.
Applicants must specify which of the two projects they wish to be considered for and the project description must clearly reflect the topic of the chosen projects.
The application should include a detailed description of the PhD project. The overarching research question is defined by project 1 or 2, but the application should nonetheless define the research question in greater detail. The application should then link the research question to a choice of relevant theory, research design and methods, and include a work schedule. The project description must not exceed 8 pages.
Successful applicants must participate in a DIIS-SDU research programme that over the three-year period will train the two candidates and embed the two projects in a NATO studies framework. The research programme will involve PhD courses, seminars, and active participation in conferences and workshops, as well as participation in DIIS policy-relevant applied research and teaching at SDU. Moreover, the candidates will do their doctoral work partly at DIIS, partly at SDU, and the candidates are expected to participate in the general research activities of DIIS and SDU, respectively, when working there.
Applications are invited from candidates with a Master’s Degree. Only candidates with top academic qualifications will be considered for enrolment.
Your employment as a salaried PhD Research Fellow is regulated by the agreement of 11 January 2006 on Graduate Employees in government appendix 5 – protocol on PhD Research Fellows.
